It's a Rush

They always start the same way; I’m pacing back and forth by the side of the stage, out of sight and off camera, running my jokes through my head over and over. I’m like a pitcher or a chess master, visualizing each throw and each move in my head. I know the flow; I know how it’s going to go. I only ever hear half of our host’s introduction, a shame because they are always quite clever, but this is the price of being in the show.

Eventually I hear the familiar words of my scripted opening and I know it is time. The last words hit the speakers and I am already walking across the stage.

“It’s the man in the hat, Mr. Larry Gent.”

The crowd cheers as I sit down. It’s show time. It’s time to be on Geeks Versus Nerds.
